The Magic: The Gathering Assassin’s Creed crossover is here and spoiler season has officially started! So far, we’ve gotten dozens of new and powerful cards to sift through.
For the hardcore Assassin’s Creed fan, this set is stacked with legendary characters from the game. The new crossover is also Modern legal, so there’s potential for a shakeup in Modern in addition to the Modern Horizons 3 cards that were released this past week.
We’ve compiled the major reveals from MTG x Assassin’s Creed so far, from new Commanders, game-breaking artifacts, equipment, and more!
MTG x Assassin’s Creed: Best New Commanders
There’s a handful of new Commanders from the Assassin’s Creed set, so we’re breaking them down by color combination! The assassin creature type is expanding its color horizons quite a bit, as there are assassins of every color! Who would have thought we’d live in an age when Naya had assassins?
MTG x Assassin’s Creed: Best New Grixis & Esper Assassin Commanders
Assassin’s are going three colors! Pirate decks will be pleased to see Edward Kenway spoiled in the Grixis archetype. He has a powerful Treasure ability that can generate a chestful of Treasures every turn, as well as vehicle synergies.
Our first Esper assassin is Ratonhnhaké:ton! This Commander could be built a variety of ways, the first of which is voltron style. Since it has hexproof and unblockable on its first attack, you could wait until it has lethal Commander damage power to swing through for an attack. Ratonhnhaké:ton also has graveyard synergy for equipments, making it perfect for this archetype.
MTG x Assassin’s Creed: Best New Naya Assassin Commanders
Who said assassins had to be stealthy? Naya proves as long as you can kill a player, you can be an assassin too. Although, we’re stretching the traditional MTG color pie here.
Eivor, Wolf-Kissed is a pretty beefy human assassin warrior designed with Saga and land decks in mind. If you get an unblocked attack through, you’ll be able to mill 7 and likely be able to return a Saga from your graveyard to play!
Sigurd on the other hand has some impressive stats for a three drop. It has vigilance, trample, and lifelink, so you’ll be winning combat on every attack. He also plays well with Sagas and lets you skip through to the final chapters quicker than normal. Sigurd is ideal for a deck that wants to proliferate creature counters and Sagas.
MTG x Assassin’s Creed: Best New Dimir Assassin Commanders
Of course, Assassin’s Creed hasn’t forgotten about the classic stealthy Dimir assassins! New reveals include Basim Ibn Ishaq and Achilles Davenport.
Basim is a voltron card advantage engine Commander. Every turn, he can draw you a card and slice in for more and more damage.
Achilles, on the other hand, rewards you for going Assassin Tribal. It will pump all your assassins and comes down at a reduced cost thanks to freerunning.
MTG x Assassin’s Creed: Best New Boros and Izzet Assassin Commanders
For the Boros color pair we have Aya of Alexandria, taking us back to the Egyptian era of Assassin’s Creed. Aya can become a token-generating engine for decks stacked with historic creatures. A card is historic if it has the legendary supertype, is an artifact, or is a saga. It’s also a recurring mechanic in the Assassin’s Creed set.
Izzet gets Mary Read and Anne Bonny, a pair of human assassin pirates. She has a pretty interesting ability that turns discarding cards into treasure. There are some potential combos here in multiple formats. Seismic Assault is an old-school card that comes to mind.
MTG x Assassin’s Creed: Best New Orzhov Commander
We have one Orzhov Commander spoiled today, and boy is it a banger! Shay Cormac costs only two mana and can completely wreck opponents that rely on protection for their creatures. If they have a glass cannon style combo Commander, Shay says no thanks and makes the coast clear to kill anything.
This card is reminiscent of Shadowspear, except it goes the whole nine yards and hits shroud as well as ward and protection.
Shay is a bit of a voltron Commander and pumps himself up whenever you kill a creature an opponent controls. Not bad.
MTG x Assassin’s Creed: Best New Non-Assassin Commanders
Azorius creatures are too goody two-shoes to be assassins. This color combination follows the letter of the law with conviction. Instead of assassins, we get two unique Commander options with Haytham and Sokrates.
Haytham is a haymaker in Knight builds, granting all Knights +2/+2. As an added bonus, he also exiles up to three creatures on ETB! That’s pretty powerful, but also puts a target on his back!
Sokrates is a Commander that asks the question, do you really want to attack? He’s a bit of a political card, which makes perfect sense.
MTG x Assassin’s Creed: Best New Mono-Colored Commanders
Everything is an assassin with Roshan! This is the perfect card for your assassin tribal deck to make the best out of your non-assassin cards. This can lead to some pretty busted synergies when you can start paying the freerunning alternate cost for everything.
Layla is a Gravedigger engine for historic cards, and honestly, is a bit slow for some decks. She might be a consideration for the 99. If you deal combat damage to 3 different players in Commander, you can return 3 historic cards from your graveyard to your hand, so the card advantage potential is there.
MTG x Assassin’s Creed: Best New Equipment for Commander
Perhaps the most broken cards for Commander are the equipment from the set. Caduceus is absolutely nuts in EDH. When played early, it gives your creature +5/+5, indestructible, and lifelink. For some reason, it also prevents all damage dealt to it in case it loses indestructibility.
MTG seems trigger-happy to introduce Mjolnir before the MTG x Marvel crossover. This version punishes go-wide decks for attacking.
We expect quite a few more powerful equipment to be revealed, so stay tuned for even better equipment upgrades in Commander.
MTG x Assassin’s Creed: Best New Artifacts for Commander
Wow, do we have some epic artifacts in the Assassin’s Creed crossover! Commander players everywhere are going to know about Crystal Skull, Isu Spyglass sooner or later. It’s a second Mystic Forge you can run in your artifact decks, except it also hits historic lands!
Apple of Eden, Isu Relic is an interesting one. It might be more powerful than meets the eye. Late game it can be used as a draw spell that resets your hand to whatever the player with the most cards has.
That’s everything for the biggest and baddest cards spoiled for Commander so far today from MTG x Assassin’s Creed!
More spoilers will be revealed this week, and you can catch them all on our X (formerly Twitter) account here.
