Want to build a Commander deck that is fun for everyone at the table to play against? We’ve compiled a list of our personal favorite decks that add style and substance to any game of Commander.
Being fun to play against doesn’t always mean it’s a group hug deck, although many cards on our list follow that archetype. Sometimes, introducing an element to the game that makes players behave or act differently than they normally would adds a layer of depth and excitement, which you’ll see in the Commanders we have selected.
Without further ado, here are our Top 10 Most Fun Commanders To Play Against:
#1 Kibo, Uktabi Prince

Our favorite Commander to face off against is Kibo, Uktabi Prince. This mischievous little monkey hands out Banana tokens to everyone, which not only adds some fun to the game, but also provides mana and life gain.
Plus, some players get really creative, finding unique ways to dish out Banana tokens to everyone.
#2 Queen Marchesa

Introducing the Monarch to any Commander game makes for a more fun experience. One of the best Commanders with this mechanic is Queen Marchesa.
The Monarch ability reads, “At the beginning of your end step, draw a card. Whenever a creature deals combat damage to you, its controller becomes the monarch.”
This brings an incentive for combat into the game and creates card draw opportunities for players that normally wouldn’t have them.
#3 Grothama, All-Devouring

Grothama, All-Devouring serves as an intriguing side quest Commander, presenting players with a unique dilemma: Do you focus on dealing damage to opponents, assembling your combo, or attempt to slay Grothama to draw a massive hand of cards?
Grothama pilots often incorporate protective measures for their Commander, so attackers should proceed with caution.
#4 Gor Muldrak, Amphinologist

Gor Muldrak, Amphinologist isn’t exactly a group hug deck, but rather a group slug deck. You give everyone Salamanders and watch them duke it out against each other.
Unlike other group style decks, Gor doesn’t advance anyone’s mana or card draw, but instead makes for interesting combat scenarios.
#5 Braids, Conjurer Adept

If you want an exciting game of Commander, Braids, Conjurer Adept delivers like no other. Whether mana screwed or not, everyone will be able to play their big stuff.
Braids makes for a fast paced game. The downside, of course, is that games tend to end quicker, and she disproportionately helps out decks with a higher CMC curve.
This is a great Commander to mix things up in a pod, but probably better as part of a rotation alongside other Commander decks.
#6 Xantcha, Sleeper Agent

Xantcha, Sleeper Agent introduces forced combat into the game and gives players an additional way to draw cards. If a player is getting too far ahead and controls Xantcha, other players can scheme to use their mana to knock the leader down a few notches.
#7 Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis

Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis is one of the very few four-color Commanders ever printed in the game. They embody the definition of a group hug Commander, giving players card draw and ramp.
#8 Zedruu the Greathearted

Zedruu the Greathearted makes any game of Commander more exhilarating. Yes, it looks like innocent fun, until your opponent gives you a Nine Lives and you have to figure out how to respond.
A funny thing about synergies here with Nine Lives: when it leaves the battlefield, the player you gave it to loses the game. And if the owner of Nine Lives loses the game, that means it leaves the battlefield. This means if the player who controls it tries to kill you, they actually cause themselves to lose too! That’s the kind of hilarity and complexity Zedruu can bring to the table.
#9 Ian Malcolm, Chaotician

For the Izzet players out there, we have Ian Malcolm, Chaotician. Ian gives everyone the opportunity to cast opponents’ spells. This does exactly what you think it would do in a game of Commander: adding chaos into the mix!
To juice up an Ian deck, add cards that amplify card draw, such as Howling Mine.
#10 Gluntch, the Bestower

Finally, we have everyone’s favorite Jellyfish, Gluntch the Bestower. This is a true group hug Commander that gives players counters, card draw, or tokens. You also get to use the best ability on yourself, whichever that happens to be.
Gluntch works great in a counters-matter Selesnya Commander deck, since it can put two +1/+1 counters on a creature you control every turn.
