What’s the best tokens-matter Commander in Magic: The Gathering? There are a lot of choices across multiple colors.
In this list, we’ve narrowed down the vast array of token Commanders to the ten best. It covers Commanders from every color. So whether you prefer a Naya deck, Golgari, Izzet, or Esper, there is something for everyone. And if you’re looking at power levels, we’ve got some cEDH token Commanders, as well as those more suited for the casual crowd.
The token archetype is pretty broad and includes treasures, food, creatures, and more. This list encompasses them all, not just go-wide creature-based decks.
Buckle up and multiply your chances of victory with our list of the Top 10 Best Token Commanders in MTG:
#1 Jetmir, Nexus of Revels
Jetmir is a cEDH-level Commander for token-based decks. This Cat Demon gives you access to Naya colors, which provides great flexibility and access to all the token doubling and enhancing effects you could want.
If you have 10 1/1 tokens out with Jetmir in play, they each get +3/+0, vigilance, trample, and double strike. Altogether, that’s 80 damage in total—enough to KO two players, not including Jetmir on the attack.
#2 Chatterfang, Squirrel General
Chatterfang is the first card on our list that creates additional tokens. Every time you create a Treasure, Food, or any other type of token, you’ll get that many Squirrels too.
There are quite a few combos involving Chatterfang, one being with Pitiless Plunderer to generate infinite Treasure tokens and wipe all opponents’ creatures from the board. Throw in a Blood Artist to win the game.
#3 Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer
Brudiclad is one of the oldest Commanders on this list, originally printed in 2018, and it’s still one of the most popular token Commanders.
This Commander can steal games out of nowhere! For instance, you can use Rite of Replication to copy the strongest creature in play. Then, at the beginning of combat, you create a new token, and all your tokens can become copies of the strongest creature you replicated with Rite. Since they all have haste, you can attack for the win.
#4 Jinnie Fay, Jetmir’s Second
Jinnie Fay has become a fan-favorite token Commander since her release a few years ago in Streets of New Capenna. She turns any token into 2/2 creatures with haste, which can become lethal out of nowhere.
Combo Jinnie with cards like Old Gnawbone, and she’ll give you seven 3/1s instead of seven treasures. Not bad!
#5 Brenard, Ginger Sculptor
Brenard, Ginger Sculptor can create some pretty wild board states by turning any nontoken creature you control that dies into a token. This means that if you have token-matters cards like Doubling Season out, you get twice the tokens from Brenard’s triggers. You can also populate the tokens with cards like Nesting Dovehawk.
There are many ways to build an interesting Brenard deck. Because the token only comes into play when a creature dies, using creatures that sacrifice themselves is a solid strategy. Consider cards like Sakura-Tribe Elder, Mulldrifter, and Selfless Spirit for this approach.
#6 Marneus Calgar
Marneus is one of the most popular token-based Commanders in Magic and the best option in Esper. Combine him with cards like Bitterblossom to draw an additional card every turn. Plus, he has a built-in win-the-game mechanic if you can generate infinite mana.
#7 Adrix and Nev, Twincasters
Want your Commander to double your tokens for you? Adrix and Nev are the way to go. Not having a third color limits access to some wide token generators.
The Ward 2 ability is a significant factor here and will often be enough to discourage opponents from spending half their mana or more just to slow you down.
#8 Baylen, the Haymaker
Baylen, the Haymaker is fresh from the Bloomburrow set. It creates an opportunity to storm off in a single turn. For instance, if you make 4 tokens on turn 4, you can tap those tokens to generate two more mana and perhaps make another 2 tokens. You can then use these new tokens to generate additional mana, and so on.
If you’re wondering, because Baylen is the one tapping creatures to gain the benefit, you can use those tokens for Baylen’s abilities the turn they enter. Summoning sickness doesn’t apply in this case.
The advantage of using Baylen as your Naya token Commander is that you don’t have to attack or do anything with your tokens until it is beneficial for you to do so. Instead, they can add mana, draw cards, or pump Baylen in a voltron style while you wait for an opening.
#9 Caesar, Legion’s Emperor
Caeser, Legion’s Emperor is a new Commander from the Fallout Universes Beyond Commander decks. Being in Mardu gives you access to most token-matters abilities other than green, which is a notable loss.
The upside of Caeser in black is aristocrat abilities such as Blood Artist. Caeser even has his own built-in trigger that deals damage to a player equal to the number of tokens you control.
#10 Hazel of the Rootbloom
Also fresh from Bloomburrow is Hazel of the Rootbloom. Like Baylen, Hazel can tap even summoning-sick creature tokens to add mana to your mana pool.
Hazel has an interesting combination of abilities. You can both ramp your mana into big and awesome spells and create a single copy of a token you created every turn. Ideally, you’ll use Hazel to create a token of something big, powerful, and impactful.
Consider running cards like Saw in Half to make powerful tokens of creatures that you’ll double.
Those are the top 10 token Commanders we recommend in the EDH format. If you’re looking to add more power to your Commander deck, you’ll also want to check out our list of the Top 12 Token Doublers in MTG for Commander.
