Pro Tour Modern Horizons 3 has broken down Day 1 win rates for each archetype, and the results may surprise you.
Mono-Black Grief had the highest overall win rate at 59.3%, followed by Bant Nadu at 58.4%, and Boros Energy and Four-Color Nadu at around 55.6%.
Perhaps the most surprising of all is that the worst deck in the Modern meta at PT MH3 is Ruby Storm, which was the second most popular deck at the event.
Have we ever seen the second most popular deck flop so badly? Or is it simply the result of a Nadu-flooded meta?
The Modern metagame win rate breakdown, provided by Play MTG, the official X account of MTG tournament coverage, is below:

This just goes to show that the metagame matters, and even professional MTG players don’t know what to expect when going in blind to a Pro Tour level event.
Now that decklists have been fully published, we also got a peek at the most played cards overall at Pro Tour Modern Horizons 3. Below is a summary from Saffron Olive via X (formerly Twitter).

Perhaps not so shocking is that The One Ring is the most played card in the tournament, yet it’s also one of the least debated compared to its prominence. The card has become a staple in every format it’s legal in, yet somehow it often evades discussion because it isn’t an actual win condition or archetype-defining like Nadu, Winged Wisdom or Grief.
We can see that Pro Tour Modern Horizons 3 actually has more copies of Phlage, Titan of Fire’s Fury than Nadu, Winged Wisdom. No wonder it’s now the most expensive card in Modern Horizons 3.
Some MTG players have aptly pointed out that almost all of the top ten most played cards in Modern are from the two most recent Modern sets.

Will any cards be banned from Modern following the conclusion of Pro Tour Modern Horizons 3? Based on the outstanding results of Nadu, the proliferation of The One Ring, and the heavy reliance on Phlage for removal, there certainly could be.
Oddly enough, The One Ring wasn’t even mentioned in the B&R update on June 24. MTG did say they had ‘concerns’ around Nadu, Winged Wisdom at that time.

The next Modern Banned & Restricted List update will be on August 26th, 2024.
