The latest MH3 Modern Pro Tour is favoring a single deck again, and no, it isn’t Rakdos Evoke. Exactly 25.5% of the Modern decks submitted for Pro Tour Modern Horizons 3 were either Bant Nadu or Four-Color Nadu, totaling 62 out of 243 deck submissions.
The metagame breakdown was released earlier today by the official MTG tournament coverage website, magic.gg.
Modern Horizons 3 Metagame Breakdown
As we can see, Bant Nadu completely dominated the list, making up a percentage of the field we haven’t seen since before Rakdos Evoke decks saw Fury banned.
For reference, here is what Pro Tour LOTR looked like before the banning.
Modern Horizons 3 has proven again just how much these sets will shake up the Modern format. Rakdos Evoke, Four-Color Omnath, Rhinos, Dimir Control, Living End, Izzet Murktide, Five-Color Creativity, and Jeskai Breach are all gone or largely altered in the new meta breakdown
Instead, the decks MTG pros have deemed best for Pro Tour MH3 include Nadu, Ruby Storm, Jeskai Control, Mono-Black Necro, Eldrazi Tron, and Boros Energy, each comprising 5% or more of the deck submissions.
It may come as a shock to many just how popular Nadu, Winged Wisdom has become, given that its price has fallen to $10 or less this week, while Phlage, Titan’s Fury has skyrocketed to $50.
With the preliminary deck submissions, the days of Nadu, Winged Wisdom under $10 may be coming to an end.
Nadu, Winged Wisdom: The Combo
We covered the rise of Nadu, Winged Wisdom in both its Bant and 4-color forms earlier this month. It’s basically a Chord Toolbox Combo deck that uses Nadu, Winged Wisdom and Shuko to draw your deck.
Nadu, Winged Wisdom draws you up to two cards per creature, per turn, when that creature is targeted. If one of the cards you draw is a land, you put it onto the battlefield untapped. With Shuko, you can target your creatures with the equip ability for free to keep the draws coming.
What Does This Mean for Modern, and Will Nadu Be Banned?
Given the amount of brewing and new strategies available from MH3, along with the prominence of established archetypes in the format, achieving a 20-25% metagame breakdown at this early stage is remarkable. MTG pros are signaling strongly that Nadu is the deck to beat.
With such a significant number of deck submissions, it wouldn’t be surprising for a few of these to make the top 8. Statistically speaking, with a 50/50 chance, we would expect 25% of the top 8 to consist of Nadu decks, or approximately two top 8 finishes.
Usually, when the format revolves heavily around a particular deck, players begin to call for bans. However, it’s premature to determine if that’s necessary now, as we don’t yet know Nadu’s win rate or how the format will adapt with new MH3 cards. Over time, it may turn out that Nadu isn’t the top deck after all.
Ruby Storm, Jeskai Control featuring Phlage, Mono-Black Necro, Eldrazi Tron, and Boros Energy are all either new or updated decks that could demonstrate their prominence in this Pro Tour.
We’ll have to wait and see which new Modern deck or classic archetype emerges victorious!
Pro Tour Modern Horizons 3 will be broadcast on Twitch at 11 a.m. Central European Time on Friday and Saturday, and at 10 a.m. Central European Time on Sunday.
