MTG Foundation spoilers are releasing all week. We’ve already seen one of the most powerful Elves ever printed, Dionus, and now we have an incredibly powerful Koma variant.
The new Koma is Koma, World-Eater, and has the exact same mana cost as Koma, Cosmos Serpent. Take a look here, side by side with the original Koma.
The original Koma causes table groans in Commander worldwide, primarily because it creates a 3/3 on every player’s upkeep, which can then be used to tap down cards or give Koma indestructibility.
The new Koma, World-Eater, is more powerful in certain ways and less in others. For starters, the obvious difference is that its power/toughness is much bigger at 8/12. In Standard, this Koma could be argued to be far superior, given that ward 4 makes it almost impossible to target with spot removal. With a single attack, you’ll create a bevy of blockers that can threaten lethal on the next turn.
In Standard, Koma, World-Eater could become a staple. Ramping into it on turn 5 is very realistic. This is especially true since Llanowar Elves is also being reprinted in MTG Foundations.
Overall, we would say the old Koma has an edge in Commander formats, thanks to the versatility of being able to tap other permanents and triggering without having to go through combat. That being said, every Koma, Cosmos Serpent Commander deck is getting a big upgrade in the 99 with Koma, World-Eater.
With a Koma, World-Eater in play, you’ll be getting 4 additional serpents every turn to sac to your Koma, Cosmos Serpent, and between the two, you’ll be sure to dodge either spot removal or board wipe effects.
MTG Foundations is proving to be loaded with powerful creatures. Check back with MTG Insider daily for more spoilers and analysis as they drop.
