MTG players everywhere are opening booster packs this weekend as part of the global prerelease of Modern Horizons 3. To the confusion of some, these MH3 packs may contain a major printing error.
It’s important that players know about this particular error as it could lead to misplays at prerelease and draft events.
See the MH3 misprinting mistake below:
Pictured is a Legion Leadership with a Boggart Bog on the other side! As indicated at the bottom left of both sides of the card, that’s not the card it’s supposed to flip into.
This could lead to some players misplaying the card or at least not knowing what the correct flip face of the card is supposed to be.
And no, this isn’t a prank being pulled on Reddit. WOTC actually confirmed this error would happen way back in their May 21 article about collecting Modern Horizons 3. At that time, they released the following statement to prepare players:
Note that for a small number of English-language Modern Horizons 3 Play Boosters, traditional foil double-faced uncommons were misprinted with incorrectly matched faces. These cards may be played as though mechanically identical to their non-misprint counterparts to correctly match double-faced cards based on the front face of the card and do not represent mechanically unique printings.
MTG OFFICIAL STATEMENT On MODERN HORIZONS 3 MISPRINTS
If you encounter this error in draft or sealed, MTG directs players to play the card based on the “front face of the card.” You can’t play it as the card you prefer. According to the MTG comprehensive rules, the front face of a modal double-faced card is:
712.3a A modal double-faced card’s front face is marked by a front-face symbol in its upper left corner. The front-face symbol is a single black triangle inside a sideways teardrop. 712.3b A modal double-faced card’s back face is marked by a back-face symbol in its upper left corner.
MTG COMPREHENSIVE RUles
In the case of Legion Leadership, the Instant side has the “single black triangle inside a sideways teardrop” at the top left. This is the proper card.
Keep in mind, you are able to play both sides of Legion Leadership as intended, as it is still a modal double-faced card, even if the reverse side is misprinted.
If you happen to pull one of these erroneously printed cards, don’t throw it away. These kinds of misprints have been rare in the history of MTG, and collectors are often eager to pay a premium to own one.
Prerelease events for MH3 continue this weekend and the MH3 set officially releases on June 14, 2024.
There will be a Pro Tour Modern Horizons 3 at MagicCon Amsterdam from June 28-30.
