Modern Horizons 2 was the best-selling set of all time after it was released. Three years later, MTG is looking to recapture the magic with MH3. Will Magic: the Gathering players find the new set as appealing?

Today, MTG released its debut video for MH3, titled “An Ode to Magic”. The overriding theme of the stream was showcasing the nostalgia of the set, while emphasizing it was made for longtime fans of the game by fans of the game.

Major announcements revealed include the new Ripple Foils for the Collector’s Edition Commander precons, as well as a select handful of spoilers.

The most anticipated cards are the new “free spells”. MH2’s Fury, Grief, Solitude, and Subtlety all saw major play in Modern. The cards were so good, decks that played them had to be nerfed in December.

MH3 Boderless Frame Break Free Mana Spells

The MH3 free mana cycle was revealed above, and will have a regular printing and borderless frame break version.

Many players are excited about the new Eldrazi cards being released in MH3, as evidenced by the 90% increase in price on the secondary market for the Eldrazi Incursion Precon. Here’s a look at the serialized eldrazi cards that will appear in Collector Boosters of the set.

Serialized cards in MH3

The bling doesn’t stop there. All Commander precons in MH3 (which FYI aren’t modern legal) will have a collector’s edition. You can buy all 4 for around $500 at the time of writing.

These collector’s editions will feature an entirely new foiling process called Ripple Foils.

Ripple Foils are designed to look like waves, or ripples of ocean current when they move around in the light. Spoiled above are the four face commanders of the MH3 precons in this new foiling process.

MH3 will feature profile commander cards too, designed to show an up close and personal view of your favorite legends.

The spoilers didn’t stop there. After the debut video ended, MTG had an after show that spoiled more powerful MH3 cards, some of which were already leaked. It also confirmed Breya, Etherium Shaper will be inducted into the Modern format.

Now confirmed, Eladamri is finally back in MTG. His first and last appearance on an MTG card was over 25 years ago in the Tempest set and made it to our list of the 10 Best Elf Commander cards of all time.

Hitting up more nostalgia, we got a look at a new Esper commander, Anna Kennerud, Skycaptain. This character was first referenced in the flavor text of Ice Age card Kjeldoran Skyknight. Sadly, Arna didn’t bring back the highly confusing Banding mechanic.

The after show revealed a new enchantment and aura commander, Pearl-Ear, Imperial Advisor. The new commander from the main set will have both a borderless profile and foil etched version.

Finally, one of the most welcome reprints of the set is the medallion cycle. MH3 will be releasing a frame break borderless version of each of the medallions, seen below.

For full spoilers and reveals, watch the after show on Magic’s official Twitch account and the debut stream below.

Previews for MH3 begin today and end on May 31. Prerelease events start on June 7 and the set officially releases on June 14, 2024.

The set will also be featured in Pro Tour Modern Horizons 3 at MagicCon Amsterdam June 28-30.
