UPDATED: This article has been updated as of August, 2024
Way back in 2019, an MTG Netflix series was announced by the Russo Brothers. It’s been five years and many Magic: the Gathering players are wondering, is the MTG Netflix show canceled?
It’s a good question, considering the turmoil Hasbro has been facing over the past year, such as laying off 1,100 employees last December.
The short answer is no. The show isn’t canceled. But it certainly isn’t progressing as planned.
The last official statement we have on the MTG Netflix show is from October 2023, when Chris Cocks, CEO of Hasbro, told investors in their Q3 2023 earnings call that the company was still involved in the film and media industry with continued plans for “an animated Magic series with Netflix”.
This was fantastic news for the MTG community that had been waiting years for an update. Although the MTG Netflix series isn’t dead, there still hasn’t been an update in the past 6 months since Cocks made the above statement.
What We Know So Far About MTG’s Netflix Show
What we do know is the Netflix show was supposed to be about the planeswalkers; including Gideon, a character who is now dead in MTG’s lore. In fact, he died right around the time the Netflix series was announced.
Netflix Geeked, one of the official Netflix social media accounts, posted the below graphic revealing that the show would take place on Ravnica, focus on planeswalkers, and star Brandon Routh as the voice actor for Gideon. The series was also pegged with a 2022 release date.

In August 2021, Brandon Routh released a video statement telling fans about his excitement to play Gideon and that he has been a longtime MTG player. Watch below:
Around the time of Routh’s voice casting reveal, it was also announced that Jeff Kline would be leading the project and that the Russo Brothers had stepped away due to “creative differences in handling the intellectual property” according to Variety.
Since those announcements in 2021, we haven’t heard anything from Jeff Kline, Netflix, or Brandon Routh on the MTG Netflix show.
Will the MTG Netflix show continue to be about Gideon, now that he has been out of MTG’s main storyline for years? Or is the entire show being reworked for the post-March of the Machine’s storyline? We will have to wait and see. Fingers crossed that this series isn’t stuck in development forever.
