If your love language is Magic: The Gathering, we’ve got some great news. Wizards of the Coast has announced the new death race set, dubbed “Aetherdrift,” will release on February 14, 2025, or Valentine’s Day. It’s the first Standard set scheduled to release in the new year.
MTG has made some pretty huge reveals today, including two other set announcements, more than a handful of spoilers, and the fact that Universes Beyond sets will be Standard-legal from now on!
The Aetherdrift preview showcases the set’s epic narrative, includes three exclusive card previews, and features stunning new artwork that hints at the dark, high-octane world of death racing to come.
MTG Aetherdrift Set Story & Plot

The Aetherdrift set is described as a death race across 3 different Magic: The Gathering planes. In the spoilers MTG revealed today, we also see the artwork and design of the set is based on Kaladesh. The Aetherdrift set name is partly inspired by the Aether Revolt expansion set that took place on Kaladesh.
Aetherdrift Spoilers
First up, here’s a sneak peek at the new spoilers revealed today for the Aetherdrift set:
Brightglass Gearhulk

We’re getting a throwback to the Gearhulks of Aether Revolt with Brightglass Gearhulk. Rather than 6 mana, this one is four mana and in a color pair.
The old Gearhulks were Standard staples, and the new lineup looks like it will be as well. For four mana, we are getting a 4/4 with two relevant keyword abilities and the ability to grab two cards from your deck and put them into your hand. This is like a juiced Ranger of Eos that can grab three times the number of targets.
I predict this card will be a staple of Selesnya Commander decks for years to come, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it became a major player in Standard.
Daretti, Rocketeer Engineer

Daretti has also wheeled back onto the scene with a powerful ETB and attack trigger.
Is a five-mana Goblin Welder variant powerful enough for Standard? That’s a question players will get to test for themselves next year.
Daretti is returning as a legendary creature, so players can build him out as a Commander too.
Earthrumbler

The final spoiler revealed today for Aetherdrift is Earthrumbler. We’ve got some decent stats here, but nothing groundbreaking.
The artwork reveals a pretty obvious racetrack. Combined with the logo and the “death race” theme of the set, it’s pretty obvious the picture MTG is painting for the design of the set.
The Aetherspark

Also partially spoiled is The Aetherspark. This card begs quite a few questions, such as: what the heck is a Legendary Artifact Planeswalker – Equipment?
It also confirms that Aether Revolt will have serialized cards.
